An
overland safari is aimed at the budget conscious traveller wanting to explore
Africa in a fun adventurous way. Transport is in custom built vehicles ranging
from microbuses and landrovers to 4 x 4 trucks designed to cope with the diverse
geography and climates of Africa. These camping safaris will take you through
an awesome range of landscapes, peoples and experiences and are highly recommended
as one of the best ways to travel in Africa: A trip of a lifetime! The vehicles
are specifically modified to ensure a safe and comfortable trip through all
the conditions that you will encounter travelling in Africa. The trucks usually
are equipped with freezers, gas stoves, water tanks, tarpaulins for shade and
shelter, first aid kits, all cooking equipment, spare tyres and a host of other
equipment to ensure that you get the most out of your African safari.
The
groups range in age from 18-55 and are made up of fun loving and adventurous
travellers of all nationalities seeking to explore the magnificent Southern African
wildlife, scenery and different cultures that are sometimes more off the beaten
track. At the core of the tour are the guides. All guides are trained and registered
and although it is there job, it is their passion for Africa that will ensure
that you get the most out of your overland experience. Their awareness and knowledge
of the environment, their ability to communicate, their desire to share our
beautiful continent and a commitment to giving excellent service will ensure
that you return to experience Africa time and again the only way: OVERLAND!.
All
tours require participation by the group in the various camping chores. Accommodation
is in 2 person waterproof tents, all equipped with mosquito nets and are easily
put up and taken down. Most nights are spent camping in official campsites-these
are equipped with excellent hot showers, toilets and other amenities. Some places
that are visited require “bush camping” where there are no facilities
and you are able to experience the true beauty of the African wilderness. Certain
tours include a couple of nights of relative luxury in bedded accommodation!
A typical day starts with a hearty breakfast before setting out on the road. The joy of going overland is that the journey is sometimes more exciting than the destination. You will pass through amazing scenery, see wildlife of every description and enjoy breathtaking views. Lunches on the road consist of cold meats. salads and sandwiches. Afternoons are usually spent exploring, and dinners are cooked on the open fire under star lit African skies. Meals are varied and the ability of your guides to cook under a variety of conditions will amaze even the most fussy diner (vegetarians are well catered for too). Late night conversations around the camp fires can go on late into the night as travellers reflect on the amazing places that they have visited and exchange tales from their adventures whilst marvelling at the vast night skies in Africa.
Not all days involve moving. These rest days are for you to explore the local areas, meet the local people, visit the markets or enjoy time on your own. Numerous optional adventure activities are available on these days for those requiring an adrenaline injection! White-water rafting, bungi jumping, canoeing, skydiving, elephant back safaris and numerous others can be enjoyed at the various destinations. There is no limit to the adventure that you will have on tour.
